Rehearsed reading of the world premiere of 'Bodies Condemned by Oblivion' by Colombian playwright Jhonnathan Velasquez, staged by local LGBTIQ+ actors from Oxford.
Bodies Condemned by Oblivion comes to the Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities on Wednesday 28 October, from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. It's the world premiere of a new English translation of the play by Colombian playwright Jhonnathan Velasquez, performed as a rehearsed reading by local LGBTIQ+ actors from Oxford.
The play, originally titled Cuerpos Desahuciados por el Olvido, is set during Colombia's armed conflict. It follows two young men forcibly recruited into guerrilla forces who have to navigate both the violence of the war and their love for one another. The production is part of an international collaboration between artists from the UK, Colombia and Mexico, looking at how queer communities use creativity to resist violence and preserve memory.
The evening is split into two halves. The first is the reading of Velasquez's play; the second is produced with Queer Voices from T(Art) Productions, drawing on work by local LGBTIQ+ community members from a workshop with Velasquez and Mexican author Julio Diaz Calderon. The whole thing runs two hours including an interval, and it closes with a conversation between the performers and the creative team.
