Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra concert of Beethoven's 'Archduke' Trio and Septet, closing the orchestra's Beethoven 2027 Symposium.
The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra are at the Schwarzman Centre on Sunday 7 February, with the Archduke Trio and Septet on the bill. It's a matinee, starting at 16:00 in the Sohmen Concert Hall on Woodstock Road, and it serves as the closing concert of the orchestra's Beethoven 2027 Symposium.
The Symposium is a joint production between the orchestra and the Cultural Programme of the University of Oxford Music Faculty, and it sits within Beethoven Is Everywhere, a wider series of concerts and events running at the Schwarzman Centre from January to April 2027. The whole thing marks the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death, and the series looks at the composer's enduring and contested legacy: how his music has provoked countless interpretations, from arrangements to new compositions, and the fact that works familiar today weren't necessarily popular during his lifetime.
The venue itself is worth a mention if you haven't been. The Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities is in the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter on Woodstock Road, and it houses seven of the university's humanities faculties along with the Bodleian Humanities Library. This concert falls within the centre's second season, which runs from January to July 2027 across music, dance, theatre, visual art, film and literature, with many of the projects commissioned in collaboration with Oxford researchers.
