One-day practical art workshop with artist Helen Garrett using natural materials and handmade paper, inspired by the Ashmolean's 'Aphrodite' exhibition.
Helen Garrett is running a one-day art workshop at the Ashmolean Learning Studio on Saturday 21 November, from 10.30am to 4pm. It's built around the museum's Aphrodite: The Making of a Goddess exhibition, which opened on 8 October and runs through to 11 April 2027, so you've got plenty of time to visit the main show before or after the session.
The day is a practical one: you'll spend it making drawings and hands-on observations in response to the objects and artworks in the exhibition. You'll be working with natural materials and handmade paper under Garrett's guidance, and as you go, you'll be exploring the qualities and symbolism of the goddess. One of the best bits is that real objects from the museum's handling collection are on the table to work from, so you're drawing from the actual things rather than just looking at them behind glass. All the materials are provided, so you just need to turn up.
