Entry-level wine qualification course with a guided tasting of nine wines and a multiple-choice exam at the Leonardo Hotel Nottingham.
Notts Derby Local Wine School is running the WSET Level 1 Award in Wine at the Leonardo Hotel Nottingham on Saturday 23 January 2027. It's an entry-level qualification and a practical introduction to wine, aimed at anyone new to the subject, enthusiasts who want to study in a structured way, and people starting their first job in hospitality or wine retail.
Over the course of the day, you'll cover the main types and styles of wine, common grapes and their characteristics, and how to describe wine accurately using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wineยฎ. There's also a section on how to make food and wine pairings. The classroom day is led by a certified wine educator and includes a guided tasting of nine wines, followed by a 45-minute exam of 30 multiple-choice questions. You need at least 70% correct to pass.
The qualification carries full OfQual accreditation as a Level 1 Vocational Qualification under the UK Government's Qualifications & Credits Framework. If a full day in the city doesn't suit you, the course also runs online, taught live via interactive Zoom lessons. Notts Derby Local Wine School belongs to the Local Wine School Network, which they describe as the world's fastest-growing network of independent wine schools.
