Walkshop inspired by the work of Julia Isídrez, led by Associate Artist Amelia Daiz, to develop sculpting skills in public space.
Nottingham Contemporary is hosting a walkshop called Sculpting your Surroundings on Sunday 8 November, a session that takes sculpting out of the studio and into the city. It's led by Associate Artist Amelia Daiz, and the whole thing is inspired by the work of Julia Isídrez.
If you're not familiar with the format, a walkshop is exactly what it sounds like: a walk and a workshop rolled into one. Instead of sitting around a table in a room, you'll be out in the public space, working on your sculpting skills while you move through the city. The idea is to look at the surroundings you usually walk past without thinking and start seeing them as material to work with. It's less about making a finished object and more about the process of noticing and shaping things as you go.
Amelia Daiz is an Associate Artist at the gallery, so she's well-placed to lead this one. The session draws on Julia Isídrez's practice, which is the thread that ties the whole thing together. If you've seen Isídrez's work, you'll know it often plays with the relationship between the art and the space it sits in, so it makes sense that this workshop asks you to do the same. You'll be developing your sculpting skills in the open, rather than behind closed doors.

It's a Sunday morning in Nottingham, so it's a low-pressure way to spend a few hours doing something creative. The walkshop runs on Sunday 8 November at Nottingham Contemporary, and since it's a walkshop, you'll be spending a good chunk of it out and about rather than inside the gallery. If you've ever wanted to try sculpting but didn't know where to start, this is a decent way in.
