Seed Talk by Dr Shelby Judge on the mythic ages of ancient Greece and why these stories endure, followed by a Q&A.
The History of Greek Mythology comes to the Squire Performing Arts Centre on Thursday 26 November, part of the Seed Talks series. It's a talk that works its way through the great mythic ages of ancient Greece, from the Golden and Silver Ages through to the Bronze Age and the Age of Heroes, and asks why these stories still endure, drawing on their archetypes, moral tensions and insights into the human condition. The session runs from Mount Olympus to Medusa, tracing how Greek mythology has shaped the Western imagination for over two thousand years through its Olympian gods and epic heroes, and is followed by a Q&A.
Leading the talk is Dr Shelby Judge, a Lecturer in Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of Derby. She recently completed her PhD in English Literature at the University of Glasgow, where she focused on contemporary feminist adaptations of Greek myth. Her published work covers #MeToo and the Trojan War, 21st-century adaptations of Helen of Troy and transgender readings of Ovid, and she writes for the Literary Encyclopedia.
It's a good fit for anyone who's always had a soft spot for the classics but wants to see them from a fresh angle, rather than just a repeat of what you might remember from school. The Q&A at the end gives you a chance to pick up on anything that sticks with you.
