Free chamber concert by the low-flutes ensemble rarescale, with free improvisations and new works, as part of Nottingham Contemporary's Autumn season.
rarescale are playing Nocturne at Nottingham Contemporary on Sunday 13 December, as part of the gallery's Autumn season. It's a chamber music concert led by Carla Rees, who'll be on low flutes alongside a few guests.
If you're not familiar with them, rarescale is an East Midlands chamber ensemble that works with flexible instrumentation, and they've spent their time developing new repertoire for low flutes. The whole thing is led by Rees herself, a British low flutes player, composer and arranger who was appointed the first Professor of Low Flutes and Contemporary Flute at the Royal Academy of Music in September 2021. Her 2016 composition Nightsong was broadcast on BBC Radio 3, so she's as much a writer as she is a performer.
Nocturne takes its cue from the time of year. As the nights draw in, the group looks at the nocturnal and the spiritual journey into the dark before celebrating daybreak. They'll be working through free improvisations and new works composed especially for the ensemble, and the music is written in response to two of the gallery's exhibitions: Julia IsΓdrez: Mud is everything and Sarah Cunningham: Midnight Sun. It's the kind of thing that makes more sense when you're actually in the room, with the music and the art in the same building.
