Three free performances by the chamber ensemble rarescale, with low flutes and free improvisations, as part of Nottingham Contemporary's Autumn season.
rarescale are back at Nottingham Contemporary on Sunday 22 November with Nocturne, a set of low flutes and guests. It's part of the gallery's Autumn season and continues their collaboration with the East Midlands chamber ensemble, who work with composers to build new repertoire for low flutes. The music is led by Carla Rees, the ensemble's Artistic Director, a British low flutes player, composer and arranger who was appointed the first Professor of Low Flutes and Contemporary Flute at the Royal Academy of Music in September 2021. She plays Kingma System flutes made for her by Eva Kingma, Bickford Brannen and Lev Levit.
As the nights draw in, Rees and her guests explore the nocturnal and the spiritual, following a journey into the dark before celebrating daybreak. The performance mixes free improvisations with new works composed specifically for the ensemble, both responding to the season's exhibitions, Julia IsΓdrez: Mud is everything and Sarah Cunningham: Midnight Sun. It's a set that takes its cues from the art around it, so it makes sense to see the exhibitions before you sit down.
