Free CPD session for primary teachers led by British Geological Survey geologists, with hands-on rock and fossil samples linked to the KS2 curriculum.
The British Geological Survey is hosting a CPD session for primary science teachers on Thursday 19 November, from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm, with doors opening at 10 am. It's held at their campus on Nicker Hill in Keyworth, just outside Nottingham, and it's built around the KS2 rocks topic.
The morning and afternoon are led by the BGS geologists themselves, so you're learning from people who do this for a living rather than a general training provider. The session is designed to get you stuck into the KS2 curriculum, and the hands-on part is where it really comes together: you'll be working on the BGS campus with rock and fossil samples taken straight from their core store. It's a good chance to handle the real thing rather than just looking at photos in a textbook.
Beyond the samples, the session maps out exactly what the KS2 curriculum covers, so you'll leave knowing what you're expected to deliver. They also demonstrate a range of rock-themed classroom activities that are designed to be fun and engaging for the kids, which is often the hardest part of the topic to nail. It's a full day, and they've got you covered on the basics: lunch and refreshments are provided, so you don't need to pack a bag. The venue is fully wheelchair accessible, and there's free on-site parking, which makes getting to Keyworth a lot easier.
