Oliver Samuels, 'The Caribbean's King of Comedy', brings his new comedy play about a Jamaican family and a will to the Albert Hall Conference Centre.
Oliver Samuels brings his new play to the Albert Hall Conference Centre on Sunday 18 October, a headlining date on his UK tour. He's billed as 'The Caribbean's King of Comedy', and he's written and directed the show himself, so it's his own material from start to finish. He's not on stage alone, either: he's joined by Tesfa Edwards, Karen Harriot and Angela Jarrett.
The story centres on a family dealing with 'dead lef' — the Jamaican term for when someone dies without leaving a will. The man at the middle of it is Charles Wilkins, a Jamaican businessman and former rail worker. When he passes away, the people around him start looking at what's left. There's Louise, his faithful caregiver; Leroy, his womanising son; Clarissa, his feisty daughter based in Britain; and Raff, his brother, who's struggling for money. They're all hoping to get something from the estate, but things get messy when mysterious phone calls start casting doubt on who's actually in the will and who's out. It's a family comedy built on that kind of tension, with the laughs coming from how they all react when the money is on the line.
