Free annual conference with panels, Q&A and a workshop on Islamophobia, bringing together academics, activists and organisations.
The Nottingham Annual Islamophobia Conference is on at Figtree Primary & Nursery on Saturday 21 November, from 1:30pm to 6:00pm. It's put on by the Bridgford Muslim Action Group, and they're hoping to make it a regular fixture in the city's calendar.
The afternoon is split into three sessions. The first, 'Islamophobia: Deconstructing Systemic Racism', brings together Dr Ismail Patel, Tasnim Zaki and Majid Iqbal. The second is a panel discussion and audience Q&A with Dr Salman Sayyid, Dr Arshad Latif and Adil Tagari, so there's a chance to put your own questions to them. The third is a workshop called 'Exploring Solutions', which shifts the focus from the problem to what can actually be done about it.
That's the core of what the day is about. The conference brings together academics, activists and organisations working on Islamophobia, which the organisers describe as a form of racism that affects Muslims and non-Muslims alike across education, the workplace, healthcare, the media and politics. The aim is to get a better handle on what Islamophobia is and how it works, to hear from the organisations tackling it, to share experiences and to agree on which actions to prioritise. One particular goal is to promote the role of 'Islamophobia leads' in mosques and Muslim businesses.
