Northern Ballet brings its classical Cinderella, choreographed by Michael Pink to Prokofiev's score played live, to the Theatre Royal.
Northern Ballet bring Cinderella to the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall on Friday 23 October, with two more performances on Saturday 24 October. It's a classical staging, originally choreographed by Michael Pink for the Milwaukee Ballet, and it runs in three acts.
The story follows the one you know: Cinderella is demoted to a servant by her stepmother and stepsisters, and finds her only real support in the houseboy Jack, who acts as her guardian angel, while her mother's spirit watches over her. At the Prince's ball, her mother's magic transforms her into a ball gown and glass slippers, and the Prince eventually finds her by the slipper. She returns to her father's home, fights back her attackers, and is reunited with the Prince. The production is built on elegant waltzes, intimate duets and character work, and it follows Cinderella's journey from hardship to happiness.
On the music side, it's Sergei Prokofiev's celebrated score, and it's played live. The choreography is Michael Pink's, with set design by Bruce Brockman, costumes by Peter Cazalet and lighting by David Grill. The Nottingham dates are part of a UK tour that also takes the production to Newcastle, Norwich and Leeds.
