Free monthly nature walk led by volunteers at Attenborough Nature Reserve to identify trees and bushes by their bark, buds and winter silhouette.
Nature Spotting returns to Attenborough Nature Reserve on Wednesday 25 November, with this session focusing on winter tree identification. It's part of a series of monthly walks held in the reserve's peaceful setting, and the reserve's own volunteers lead the way, so you're out with people who know the place inside out.
The winter sessions are built around learning how to identify trees and bushes when they've lost their leaves. Without the greenery to go on, you'll be looking at the bark, the buds and the winter silhouette to work out what's what. It's a different way of seeing the woods — reading the structure and the detail that usually gets hidden when everything is in full leaf.
If you've spent any time around the reserve, you know it's a quiet spot on the edge of the city, and these walks are a good way to spend a morning there. The focus is on the trees and shrubs of the reserve itself, so it's practical, hands-on learning rather than a lecture. You'll be out on the paths with the volunteers, stopping to look at the bark and the buds of the trees around you.
