Michael Portillo shares funny, insightful and poignant stories from his life on stage in this personal stage show.
Michael Portillo is coming to the Royal Concert Hall on Saturday 24 October, bringing his stage show A Life of Two Halves to Nottingham. If you know him, you know the two halves: the former Secretary of State and the broadcaster who's become a bit of a national favourite for his love of trains.
It's a fair distance between the two. He served under Margaret Thatcher, ran for the leadership of the Conservative Party, and then lost his seat in one of the most famous moments in British political history. From there, he moved into television, where he's spent years sparring with the likes of Diane Abbott and Andrew O'Neill, and taking viewers on journeys across some of the world's greatest railways. The show draws on both sides of that divide.
There's a personal thread running through it, too. He talks about his father, a refugee who fled the Spanish Civil War, and how those early family stories shaped him. He covers his break into television and the international adventures that followed, so it's as much about his life outside the Westminster bubble as it is about the time he spent in it. He describes the stories as funny, insightful and poignant, and they're told on stage rather than through a screen.
