Art session for 15-25 year olds in which artist Milee (Feng-Ru) Lee makes handmade inks and drawing tools from natural materials to draw with.
Milee (Feng-Ru) Lee is back in Studio 2 at Nottingham Contemporary on Sunday 18 October, from 1pm to 3pm, for the second session of Ink Play - From Nature to Mark. It's a workshop for 15 to 25-year-olds, and if you're in that age bracket and fancy spending an afternoon making your own ink, this is exactly that.
Lee starts by making handmade inks and drawing tools from earth, charcoal, plant matter, pigments and water, and lets the materials shape the process. The whole thing is experimental, and it takes its lead from the work of Sarah Cunningham and Julia Isídrez, whose calligraphy moves beyond the readable word: ink becomes an active material that bleeds, pools, fades and travels across the surface. Lee describes the sessions as a conversation between nature, material and the hand, and invites you to slow down and let the material lead.

It's part of the exhibition 1525: Pocket Altars - Ritual as Practice, which she's doing with Wingshan. The session runs from 1pm to 3pm on Sunday 18 October in Studio 2, and admission is free, though donations are welcome. Tickets are very limited, so the organisers ask that you only book if you're sure you can make it, and that you email info@nottinghamcontemporary.org to cancel if your plans change. The space is wheelchair accessible.
