Heritage talk by local historian Mo Cooper on the 200-year history of St Ann's allotments in Hungerhills, West Bridgford.
Tales from Hungerhills is a heritage talk coming to West Bridgford Library on Tuesday 27 October, and it's one that'll likely hit home if you've spent any time around the city's allotments. Local historian Mo Cooper takes the lead, and the whole thing centres on St Ann's allotments — Nottingham's unique Victorian detached garden site, a Grade 2* listed garden where people have lived or gardened for around 200 years.
It's a site with a rich and unlikely history, and Cooper pulls on a few different threads to tell it. There's murder, poverty, hidden goats, the old rifle range, and the Windrush generation — a broad spread of stories that run through the same patch of ground. The talk uses those to trace the lives, loves and passions of the people who passed through, and the organiser describes it as 'Nottingham's life in miniature'. If you've ever wondered about the layers of history beneath the soil of the city's gardens, this is exactly that.
