One-man live storytelling show by Edwyrdian Tales, directed and performed by Matthew Wood, bringing Victorian and Edwardian ghost stories to life beside a Christmas tree.
Matthew Wood brings Ghost Stories for Christmas to Springfield - Special Occasions & Events Hall on Thursday 19 November, a one-man storytelling show that does exactly what the title says. It's a live performance staged beside a Christmas tree, and the whole thing runs for an hour and twenty minutes with no interval.
On the night, Wood performs Edwyrdian Tales, a set that pulls from Edwardian and Victorian ghost stories and weird fiction. The programme includes Lucky's Grove by H.R. Wakefield and The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood, alongside an original tale called The Elder Son. It's a mix of the old and the new, with the classic ghost story tradition sitting right next to something written for the show.
Wood founded Edwyrdian Tales in 2020, and he's the one who directs and performs it. During the pandemic, he moved his shows from heritage sites like The Tower of London and Whitby Abbey online, and since then he's taken the production to Hampton Court Palace and the Jersey Museum of Country Life, with nationwide tours in 2024 and 2025. He's also done immersive theatre across Britain's heritage sites and performed at literary festivals dedicated to M.R. James and H.P. Lovecraft, so the whole thing sits firmly in that tradition of storytelling by candlelight.
