Guided beer tasting with pub snack pairings led by fermentation scientist and certified beer sommelier Eloise Nicholson-Phillips.
The Barrel Drop is hosting a beer tasting and pub snack pairing on Thursday 5 November, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. It's tucked away at 7 Hurts Yard, not far from Market Square, in a spot described as a cosy, hidden gem. The whole evening is led by Eloise Nicholson-Phillips, a fermentation scientist and certified beer sommelier, who'll walk you through how hops, malts and carbonation interact with the salty, crunchy and savoury snacks we usually just mindlessly munch on. The snacks run from peanuts to crisps, and she'll explain what complements each flavour and what cuts through it.
There are five beer and snack pairings in total, and they're all provided as part of the session, so you don't need to bring a thing. If you're vegan or vegetarian, there are alternatives available, and it's an over-18s only event. The focus is on the pairing itself — the way a particular beer works with a particular snack — rather than just drinking through a few different pints. It's a good shout if you've ever wondered why some beers just seem to fit certain foods better than others, and you'll leave with a bit more to go on next time you're at the pub.
