A batik workshop using traditional wax and dye techniques to create a unique textile piece, suitable for all skill levels.
Shamila Chady is leading a batik workshop at Lakeside Arts Centre on Saturday 17 October, from 10:30am to 3:30pm. It's a full-day session in the Performing Arts Studio, and the whole point is to slow down and spend a few hours getting stuck into the process. You'll be working with traditional wax and dye techniques to design and create your own textile piece, which you take home with you when you're finished.
If you've never tried batik before, that's fine. The session is open to all skill levels, so you don't need any prior experience to join in. It's for ages 18 and over, and the materials are included in the price, so you just need to turn up. The focus is on the making rather than the result, so it's as much about the morning and afternoon you spend doing it as it is about the piece you end up with.
Lakeside Arts is the University of Nottingham's public arts centre and museum, set in the grounds of Highfields Park. It runs a broad programme of music, dance, theatre, visual art, special collections and family events, with two cafés and a gallery shop that stocks original work by leading craftmakers. There are also free events and workshops for families and individuals throughout the year, so if you're in the area for the batik, it's worth having a look around the rest of the centre while you're there.
