Sculptural installation and performance by Benni Bosetto in which tango dancers wear costumes that transform their bodies, exploring the corporeality of love.
Benni Bosetto brings Bar Tango to Nottingham Contemporary from Friday 13 November to Sunday 15 November, a new sculptural installation and performance that blends costumes, sculptures and scenography around a sound composition. It's curated by Almanac (Guido Santandrea and Filippo Berta) with Giulia Civardi, and it takes the tango and pulls it apart.
Bosetto frames love as a form of parasitism that intoxicates the body and alters how we perceive reality, and the work explores that through intoxication, hybridisation and coexistence. The installation is designed to be adaptable, intertwining sculpture, fashion and scenography into a constellation of objects and a surreal choreography. Tango dancers wear costumes that sculpt and transform their bodies, paired with accessories inspired by the animal, vegetal and mineral worlds. Because it's a touring work, the performance is developed in collaboration with local tango dancers at each venue it visits.
There's a broad cultural thread running through it, too: the work draws on the interweaving of European, particularly Italian, Creole and African traditions of the RΓo de la Plata region. Bosetto himself was born in Merate, Italy, in 1987 and lives and works in Milan.
