Live show by Ugly (UK), a sextet mixing sacred choral harmonies, post-rock and folk-rock, with support from Max and Felix.
Ugly (UK) play Norwich Arts Centre on Tuesday 10 November, with Max and Felix supporting. It's a standing-only night, so you'll be on your feet for both acts.
Ugly (UK) formed in Cambridge and are now rooted in London. They're a sextet, and that size is a big part of what they do: they pull from sacred choral harmonies, sprawling post-rock and the melodic warmth of 1960s and 1970s folk-rock. The choral side suggests something closer to a choir than a standard indie band, while the post-rock side points to longer, more atmospheric pieces. The folk-rock influence brings in the melodic warmth of that era, and with six voices to work with, the vocal arrangements are a good place to start if you're trying to figure out where they sit.
They describe their songwriting as built on contrast, new ideas and the rejection of convention, and they aim to give space to all six of the group's distinct voices. It's a fair amount of ground to cover in one set, and the contrast they talk about is a good way to describe the mix of choral, post-rock and folk-rock they're pulling together. Max and Felix open the night, so you'll get two acts in one evening.
