The 30-piece Down for the Count Swing Orchestra plays its annual festive big-band show with Christmas and swing classics.
The Down for the Count Swing Orchestra bring their annual festive show to The Halls on Tuesday 15 December. It's a big band with strings, 30 musicians on stage, and one of the largest swing ensembles currently touring the UK. Conductor and compère Mike Paul-Smith leads the group, which draws on some of the country's top vocalists and instrumentalists to recreate the sounds of Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday and Judy Garland in an authentic big-band-with-strings style.
The set mixes festive favourites like 'Let It Snow', 'This Christmas' and 'The Most Wonderful Time of the Year' with non-festive classics such as 'New York, New York'. It's a big-band show that doesn't stick solely to the Christmas songbook, so there's a fair bit of standard swing in there alongside the seasonal stuff.
They've played Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, the London Jazz Festival and Cadogan Hall, and have been praised by Reader's Digest, DownBeat Magazine, Jazzwise and Michael Bublé, with the magazine calling it 'a sonic ride back to the sounds of Capitol Studios in the 1950s'.
