American 'ugly-pop' rock band Skating Polly play The Adrian Flux Waterfront Studio in Norwich, with special guests Lord Friday and The 13th.
Skating Polly play The Adrian Flux Waterfront Studio on Sunday 18 October, with Lord Friday and The 13th opening for them. It's a Sunday night gig in the city, so it's one of those you can head to without worrying about a Monday morning alarm.
If you haven't come across them, Skating Polly are an Oklahoma band formed by stepsisters Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse when they were just nine and thirteen. They describe their own sound as 'ugly-pop' — unruly, subversive and wildly melodic. Kelli's brother Kurtis Mayo joined on drums in 2017, and together they've built a reputation for a live set that doesn't sit still.
Their music draws on 1970s punk and 1990s alternative rock, and they've worked with some big names along the way: Exene Cervenka of X and Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening. They've toured with Babes In Toyland and were the subject of a feature-length documentary. Their double album Chaos County Line was produced by Brad Wood, who worked on indie-rock classics like Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville.
