Free market with more than 40 independent ceramic artists selling handmade, dinosaur-inspired pottery at The Forum.
The Norwich Ceramics Market is back at The Forum on Sunday 15 November, with more than 40 independent ceramic artists on display. It's a one-day market, so if you're looking for something, you'll want to make it down on the day rather than leaving it to the weekend.
The whole thing comes from the Homegrown Pottery Society, a community of local makers who describe themselves as doing things differently, backing each other, and keeping ceramics independent — no factories, no fast ceramics. The society was started by Nicole Flack, a ceramic artist who runs the brand Cretaceous Creations. If that name rings a bell, it's probably because of her Pliosaur mugs, which have become something of a cult collectors' item around here. Born in London and brought up in Norfolk, Flack also founded the Norwich Makers Market, the indie makers' fair that's become a regular on the city's calendar.
For her, the ceramics market was about taking handmade, dinosaur-inspired pottery out of the gallery and into everyday life. She points to The Great Pottery Throw Down and a growing appetite for small-batch, local handmade as the things that pushed handmade pottery into the spotlight. The market is built around that: you're invited to meet the makers themselves and find something one-of-a-kind, rather than just picking a piece off a shelf. With over 40 artists under one roof, you'll find a good range of work, from mugs and functional ware to sculpture.
