Guided 105-minute walk led by Paul Dickson on the Black history of Norwich and Norfolk, from street traders to abolitionists, for Black History Month.
Paul Dickson is leading a black history walking tour of Norwich on Thursday 22 October, starting outside The Forum on Millennium Plain. It's a 105-minute guided walk that runs from 11:00am to 12:45pm, and it's part of the Paul Dickson Tours collection and Black History Month 2026.
The walk looks at the contribution Black people have made to the history and cultural life of Norwich and Norfolk over several centuries. It starts with the street traders of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and moves through to the musicians, entertainers and members of the armed forces of the twentieth. Pablo Fanque, described as the UK's first Black circus impresario, is one of the figures who features, alongside Lucas, a US airman who settled in Norfolk in the 1960s and helped bring soul music to the Orford Cellar.
It also goes into the region's connections with slavery and the transatlantic slave trade, highlighting Norfolk abolitionists such as Thomas Fowell Buxton, Amelia Opie and Harriet Martineau. Boxing hero Jem Mace gets a mention, as does Frederick Duleep Singh — soldier, historian, archaeologist and philanthropist, whose sister Sophia Duleep Singh was a leading suffragette. It's a broad sweep, so you'll see how the city's black history stretches from the early traders to the more recent arrivals.
