Free pop-up conversation cafe where visitors 'take out a Human Book' to talk about issues such as race, religion, disability and mental health, part of the Norwich Book Festival.
The Human Library comes to The Forum on Saturday 24 October, as part of the Norwich Book Festival. It's a conversation experience rather than a talk or a reading: you 'borrow' a Human Book for up to half an hour and have a one-to-one dialogue about subjects that usually stay uncomfortable.
The Human Books are people from groups in society that are often stigmatised, stereotyped, marginalised, mistreated or misunderstood. The conversations cover things like race, religion and refugees, disability and discrimination, LGBT and mental health. The whole idea is to challenge stereotypes and prejudices through direct dialogue, treating people as open books you can sit down and actually talk to.
It started in Denmark in 2000, founded by Ronni Abergel, and has since spread to libraries and festivals around the world. In Norwich, it runs as a pop-up conversation cafe, with both outdoor and indoor spaces depending on the weather, and it forms part of the interactive programme of the Norwich Book Festival.
