Historian Greg Jenner and illustrator Rikin Parekh present a funny, fast-paced talk on the messy beginnings of Roman Britain.
Greg Jenner and Rikin Parekh are coming to St Peter Mancroft on Monday 26 October, as part of the Norwich Book Festival. It's a pairing of a historian and an illustrator, and the subject is Roman Britain — specifically the messy, chaotic beginnings of it. If you've ever looked at the Roman Empire as a polished, inevitable machine, this is the version that pushes back on that: the early years when the conquest was far from a smooth operation.
Jenner brings the history, and Parekh brings the visuals. Together they're running through those first few centuries of Roman presence in Britain, and they describe it as a funny, fast-paced romp. It's not a dry lecture; it's a look at the period when the Romans were still figuring out how to hold onto the place, and the people living here were figuring out how to deal with them. The two of them will be talking through the period together, with Parekh's illustrations playing a part in how the story is told.

It's a morning session, so it fits into a weekday without taking up your whole evening. It runs from 11am to 12.15pm at St Peter Mancroft, right in the city centre, so it's an easy one to pop into if you're around on the Monday. If you've got any interest in how Britain ended up as a Roman province — and how messy that process actually was — it's worth a look.
