Illustrated talk by John Christie on John Berger's pilgrimage to Ronchamp, held at The Forum Auditorium.
John Christie is at The Forum on Monday 26 October, with an illustrated talk titled Four Horizons: John Berger's Pilgrimage to Ronchamp. It's a linked event for the Norwich Book Festival, so it sits alongside the wider festival programme rather than as a standalone night.
The talk focuses on John Berger's pilgrimage to Ronchamp, the small village in France where Le Corbusier built his famous chapel. Berger was a writer and art critic who spent much of his life thinking about how we see and how we look, and this particular journey to the chapel is one of the threads he pulled on. Christie's talk is illustrated, so you'll be following along with images as he works through Berger's account of the place.
If you're not already familiar with Berger, he's best known for Ways of Seeing, the BBC series and book that changed how a whole generation looked at art. He had a way of taking something as high-brow as painting and making it about the everyday, about power and class and the way we're taught to see. This talk takes that same curiosity and applies it to a single, specific site — the chapel at Ronchamp — and the pilgrimage Berger made to it.

It runs from 7:00pm to 8:00pm in The Forum Auditorium, so it's a single hour on a Monday evening. The venue is right in the city centre, NR1 2TF, and the talk is part of the Norwich Book Festival's extended programme.
