Tactile literacy story-time for young children based on the finger-trail picture book 'A Long Tail', with a scented colouring challenge.
Rebecca Atkinson is bringing A Long Tail to The Gallery on Wednesday 28 October, a free children's session that turns a story into something you can actually feel. It's built around the finger-trail picture book of the same name, and the whole thing is designed for young children to get stuck into.
The main part of the session is a tactile literacy experience: as Atkinson reads the story aloud, the children follow the book's trail with their fingers, tracing the path as the narrative unfolds. It's a way of turning reading into a hands-on, sensory activity rather than just sitting and listening, so the kids are actively tracking the story as it goes. Beside the reading, there's a scented colouring challenge to get into, which adds another layer to the morning.

Atkinson hosts the session herself, and the whole thing is free, so it's an easy one to bring the little ones along to without worrying about the cost. It's held at The Gallery in Norwich, with the reading and the colouring challenge running as part of the same visit. If you've got young children and a free morning on the 28th, it's a straightforward, sensory way to spend it.
