Award-winning play on women's empowerment by Eve Ensler, performed for two nights at Live Theatre.
The Vagina Monologues is coming to Live Theatre on Thursday 5 November, with a second performance on Friday 6 November. It's Eve Ensler's award-winning play on women's empowerment, and it's running for two nights at the Quayside venue.
Subtitled An Anthropological Exploration, the show strings together a series of women's stories and experiences surrounding their own genitalia. Ensler built the script from material she gathered from hundreds of intimate interviews, so the monologues come from real voices rather than a fictional plot. It's a collection of first-hand accounts, each one a different perspective on the same subject, and they're played one after another.
The play first made its mark off-Broadway in New York during the 1996/97 season, where it earned a Drama Desk Award nomination and an Obie Award. From there it grew into something much larger than a single production: it became the centrepiece of V-Day, a charity event held at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on Valentine's Day 1998. That night brought together a huge range of artists, with Whoopi Goldberg, Winona Ryder, Glenn Close and Susan Sarandon all taking part. Since then, it's been performed all over the world, usually as part of the V-Day campaign.
