Rory Mullarkey's new play about the felling of the Sycamore Gap tree and a father and son meeting at the site.
Rory Mullarkey brings his new play, The Most Famous Tree In The World, to Live Theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne, with the run starting on Thursday 6 May and continuing through to Saturday 29 May. It's a world premiere, and it's playing in the venue's main auditorium.
The play takes its starting point from the felling of the Sycamore Gap tree on Hadrian's Wall, an event that left a gap not just in the landscape but, as the show suggests, in the nation's sense of itself. From there it turns to a father and son, separated for years, who meet at the site of the felling and share memories over a can of beer. The play sets that small, quiet moment against the tension of a thriller and the beauty of a rolling landscape, and asks how people truly process loss and find hope.

It's a world premiere, so it's having its first run right here in Newcastle. The run is a good length, too, with nearly eight weeks to catch it if you can't make the opening. Tickets range from £38 down to £23, with concessions from £13 and the first preview at £12. It runs from Thursday 6 May to Saturday 29 May at Live Theatre, in the main auditorium.
