A mini season of American play readings featuring Topdog/Underdog, a screenplay reading, and John.
Live Theatre is hosting a mini-season of American play readings this November, running from Wednesday 11 November to Saturday 14 November. It's a short run of three different pieces, all American, and all presented as readings rather than fully staged productions. If you've never been to a reading, the format is pretty straightforward: the actors have the scripts in hand and focus on the text and the performance, with the story doing the heavy lifting rather than the sets and costumes.
The line-up brings together three very different things. There's Topdog/Underdog, the acclaimed play by Suzan-Lori Parks about two brothers and the weight of their shared past. Alongside that is a screenplay reading, so you'll be hearing a script written for the screen read aloud on stage. And then there's John, which rounds out the three. Between the two plays and the screenplay, you've got a fair bit of ground to cover over the course of the season.

Because it's a mini-season, you can pick and choose. You might just want to drop in for one particular reading, or you can see all three across the four days. The readings run from 11 November through to 14 November at Live Theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne, so there are a few different nights to work around if you're planning to catch more than one. It's a good way to get through three American scripts in one go without having to commit to a full run of each.
