A Mercury Theatre production of Jane Eyre, directed by Lily Dyble, at Northern Stage.
Jane Eyre runs at Northern Stage from Tuesday 3 to Saturday 7 November, a Mercury Theatre production directed by Lily Dyble. It's built around Sally Cookson's adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's novel, and it follows the story most of us know: orphaned Jane escapes a cruel aunt, takes a post as governess to the mysterious Mr Rochester, and eventually has to choose between love and her own integrity and independence.
It's a co-production between Mercury Theatre Colchester, Rose Theatre Kingston and Storyhouse Chester, so it's toured a bit before landing here. The creative team behind it is a long one: set designer Anna Yates, costume designer Khadija Raza, movement director Natasha Harrison, lighting designer LucĂa Sánchez Roldán, composer and sound designer Joseff Harris, fight director Rachid Sabitri and intimacy director Haruka Kuroda. That's a lot of hands on a single production, and the movement, fight and intimacy directors suggest it's a physical show, not just people standing around talking.
For Lily Dyble, this is a bit of a milestone. She won the 2025 RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award, and this is her first time directing on the midscale. Northern Stage's artistic director Natalie Ibu is also writing new shows for North East audiences, including new songs, so this sits alongside a wider push for new work in the region.
