Newcastle artists play new songs live in the studio for industry guests in a session of the Mercury Prize Fringe.
Ear to the Ground is at Neville Hall on Westgate Road on Monday 19 October, as part of the Mercury Prize Fringe. The Fringe is the official build-up to the Mercury Prize Awards, run by Generator, the North's leading music development organisation. It's the second year the Prize has returned to the city, and this time it's spread across Newcastle city centre from 15 to 22 October, with more than 30 events including live music, screenings, workshops, talks and exclusive experiences.
The format of Ear to the Ground is built for connection: it gives industry figures the chance to meet Newcastle's artists first-hand and build lasting relationships with the local scene, helping artists take the next step in their careers. Each artist showcases their work to industry guests, playing back previous recordings and performing a couple of new songs live in the studio, and leaves with recordings they can keep and use in the future. It's a studio session as much as a performance, and the recordings the artists walk away with are a practical part of the night.

Beyond the live music, the Fringe programme includes masterclasses and workshops that are open to artists, managers and music lovers at all levels, so there's a bit more to it than just the gigs. Ear to the Ground is one of the many events running across the city centre during that week. It's at Neville Hall, Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1SE, on Monday 19 October, and entry is pay as you feel.
