Exhibition featuring works by Catherine O'Donnell and over 50 local artists and students from the Newcastle area.
Welcome to the Suburbs opens at Newcastle Art Space on Thursday 24 September, with the opening night running from 6pm to 8pm. The exhibition stays on the walls until Sunday 18 October, so there's plenty of time to swing by if you can't make the opening.
The show is built around Catherine O'Donnell, who's represented by Dominik Mersch Gallery, but she's not the only name on the wall. Her work hangs alongside that of more than 50 other artists, and the mix is a proper cross-section of the local community: students from Islington Public School and preschoolers from Carinya Children's Centre are in there too, with work from all these different ages and backgrounds sharing the same space. The pieces come in a range of media, so it's not just one style or one approach on display.
That's the whole point of the show — putting an established artist like O'Donnell side by side with neighbourhood kids from the local primary school and the preschool. It's a community-driven exhibition that draws its strength from exactly that, bringing together people from across the suburb rather than keeping them in separate rooms. The opening night is supported by Harris Farm Markets.
