A hands-on workshop where participants learn to turn old T-shirts into a rug using a finger-crocheting technique. All materials are provided, but attendees should bring their own old T-shirts to cut up.
Upcycle Newcastle is running an Upcycled T-shirt Rag Rugs Workshop at the Newcastle Museum on Saturday 1 August, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. It's part of the city's Upcycle Newcastle series, so if you've been following their events, this is the next one in the line-up. The whole point is to take those old T-shirts you can't bring yourself to throw out and turn them into a rug using a finger-crocheting technique — no hooks or needles involved, just your hands.
They've got the basics covered for you. Each spot comes with a 10cm starter rug to get you going, a ball of T-shirt yarn, and some extra T-shirts to work with. The one thing you'll need to bring is your own stash of old T-shirts to cut up and work into the rug, so it's a good excuse to clear out the back of the wardrobe. Over the three hours, you'll learn how to prep the fabric and build the rug from there.
The session is aimed at adults and children aged 12 and over, so it works as a solo afternoon or something to do with a teenager. Bookings are essential, and if you have any access or inclusion needs, you can let them know when you book. The museum adds a lighthearted warning: this kind of rug making can be addictive.
