Monthly, self-directed and peer-led zine-making session at Newcastle City Library, with supplies provided and zines folded for the Zine Street libraries.
The Zine Club runs at Newcastle City Library on the second Thursday of the month, from 12 February to 10 December 2026. That's eleven sessions across the year, each running from 5:30 to 7:30pm. It's part of The Zine Project, a grassroots initiative that brings Zine Street libraries into local communities to encourage a love of zines and inspire people to make their own.
If you've never come across them, zines are small, self-published works, often made from a single sheet of paper and photocopied. The club welcomes everyone from first-timers to seasoned zine-makers, and the sessions blend writing, art, collage and DIY publishing. They're self-directed and peer-led, with support from community-engagement artist Nina Katzmarski. Part of each gathering is devoted to folding zines for distribution to the Zine Street libraries, so whatever you make can end up in the hands of someone else in the city.
The Zine Street libraries themselves are small outdoor cabinets, purpose-built by a local Men's Shed and installed across Newcastle at the Darby Street Community Garden and the Hudson Street Hub. The project was supported by the City of Newcastle through a Quick Response Grant in 2022, and the club is one of the ways it keeps the whole thing moving.
