The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever returns to King Edward Park on Sunday 2 August, the Newcastle edition of an annual worldwide event celebrating Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights. It's the tenth year the city has done this, and the format is as straightforward as it is specific: more than a hundred 'Kates' gather in the park to recreate the ethereal dance routine from the music video. If you've never seen it, it's the one with the red dress and the spinning on the moors.
Anyone can join in, and you don't need any dance experience to do it. The moves are taught on the day, and there are several rehearsal run-throughs before the official 'wuther' happens, so you'll have a few chances to get the steps right before the real thing. The dress code is part of the fun: you're encouraged to turn up in a red dress with a flower in your hair and frolic around the park. The backdrop of King Edward Park is said to resemble the wily, windy moors of the song, which is why it's the spot they pick year after year.
It's not just about the dancing, though. Donations are collected on the day to support Warlga Ngurra, a local women's and children's refuge, so whatever you give goes to a good cause right here in the region.
