Free exhibition of ceramic and wood sculptures and functional works by Karen Wells and Jono Everett, with an opening evening of music by Dark Pattern.
Tactile opens at Back to Back Galleries on Saturday 24 October, running through to 8 November. It's a joint exhibition by Karen Wells and Jono Everett, presented by Newcastle Studio Potters Inc. and the gallery. The show brings together their work in clay and wood, with finely crafted sculptures sitting alongside functional pieces.
Wells works in ceramics and Everett in wood, and the two share a deep connection to craft. Both spent part of their training in Japan: Wells studied under master potters in Mashiko, while Everett worked alongside carpenters building traditional timber houses outside Tokyo. They've each carried those influences into their practice, blending traditional knowledge with a contemporary approach. Seeing their work together in one space lets you compare how that shared background in Japanese craft plays out across two very different materials.
The opening celebrations are on Saturday 24 October from 3pm, and the evening includes music by electronic musician Dark Pattern. If you're planning to go, that's the best time to catch both artists and the music in one go. After that, the exhibition stays open until 8 November, so you can head back in later in the week if you missed the opening.
