ReFashion Lab: Pojagi Style Workshop

ReFashion Lab: Pojagi Style Workshop is at the Newcastle Museum on Saturday 15 August, a three-hour session that runs from 1:00pm. It's all about Pojagi, a traditional Korean patchwork technique usually made with translucent fabrics, and the whole thing is built around repurposing old materials rather than buying new ones.

During the workshop, you'll work with old sheer curtains, worn clothes and small fabric scraps, joining them with hand-sewn flat-felled seams to create a reversible piece of fabric roughly 60cm by 50cm. The flat-felled seam is a tidy, enclosed stitch that keeps the raw edges tucked away, and because the result is reversible, it looks the same on both sides. All the materials you need are provided, though you're welcome to bring along your own old clothing, sheer curtains or light cotton and sheer fabric scraps if you've got some at home that you'd rather see put to use.

There's a local connection to the technique too. Upcycle Newcastle, a Newcastle upcycling brand, used this same Pojagi method to make three garments for the ReFashionista 2025 event at the Museum, and two of those pieces will be on display during the session, so you can see how the patchwork translates into a finished garment. It's a good way to get a feel for the style before you start on your own piece.

The workshop is on Saturday 15 August from 1:00pm at the Newcastle Museum, 6 Workshop Way, Newcastle 2300. It costs A$10, and bookings are essential.
