A book club meeting where members read 'The Voyage Home' by Pat Barker and watch the film adaptation 'The Odyssey' by Christopher Nolan.
Reel Readers bookclub is back at Tower Cinema on Tuesday 21 July, with the usual format: the group reads a selected book and then gathers to watch its film adaptation. This session is hosted by Betty Loves Books, who run the club as a celebration of where literature and cinema cross over.
For this one, the book is The Voyage Home by Pat Barker. It's the third in her Women of Troy series, but it works as a standalone novel, following Cassandra and Agamemnon after the fall of Troy. The film that follows is Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. If you're planning to read the book first, you can pick up The Voyage Home through Betty Loves Books and use the code Reelreaders15 for 15% off.
The evening runs in two parts. The meeting kicks off at 5:00pm, and the film screens at 6:30pm, so there's plenty of time to get stuck into the discussion before the lights go down. It's a good way to see how the same story lands on the page and on the screen, and to talk it through with other people who've read the same thing.
