Masterclass in dramatic writing for live performance led by award-winning playwright Mark Rogers.
Mark Rogers is leading a masterclass in dramatic writing for live performance at the Civic Theatre on Saturday 3 October. It's run under the re:group banner, and the session is aimed at anyone working with scripts for the stage.
Rogers is a multi-award-winning playwright and theatre maker, and he's also a member of re:group, the performance collective behind POV and AUTO-TUNE. If those names ring a bell, AUTO-TUNE is the one that usually sticks: a rock opera and raucous piece of gig-theatre told through 17 original songs and a fair bit of dark humour. It's pitched as a millennial-culture love letter set in the early 2000s, following a teenager who can auto-tune away his cringe. The show was commissioned by the Sydney Opera House and developed with the support of Brand X, Crush Collective, Intimate Spectacle and the University of Sydney's Department of Theatre and Performance Studies.
That's the kind of work Rogers comes from, and it's the same world re:group operates in. The masterclass is about writing for live performance, so it's less about the page and more about how a script actually lands in a room with an audience. If you've been tinkering with a play or just want to see how a professional playwright approaches the craft, this is a good place to start.
