Solo exhibition by local artist Sophia Flegg with bold, colourful and playful artworks exploring identity, running from 16 to 24 October 2026.
Sophia Flegg opens her solo exhibition, Rat Park, at Wester Gallery on Friday 16 October, with an opening reception from 6pm to 8pm. The show runs through to 24 October, so if you can't make the opening, you've got another week to catch it.
Flegg is a Newcastle artist, mural painter and poet who's been exhibiting since the early 2000s. Her style is bold and raw, and she works across a lot of different media at once: acrylic, ink, aerosol, found objects, old notes and pencil on paper. The subjects she pulls from are just as varied — people, dogs, muscle cars, Australian culture, relationships, mental health, politics, memories and the everyday all find their way into the paintings.
This particular body of work comes from a hard stretch. Last year, Flegg lost her home and her studio to a fire, and she's been continuing to work from a makeshift studio on the floor of a garage. That context sits behind the bold, colourful, and playful artworks on display, which explore identity.
