A one-day hands-on workshop exploring random weave sculpture techniques, transforming Bangalow Palm inflorescence into unique baskets or wall sculptures.
Catriona Pollard is bringing her random weave sculpture workshop to Henry Park Hall in Hamilton South on Sunday 20 September, from 10am to 3pm. It's a one-day session where you'll work with Bangalow Palm inflorescence to make either a basket or a wall sculpture, and you'll walk away with whatever you've spent the day building.
Pollard is an award-winning basketry artist and teacher who runs these as hands-on workshops. The main thing you'll be doing is random weave, a sculptural way of working with plant material that lets you build out in three dimensions rather than sticking to a flat plane. Along with that, she teaches a looping technique—a simple, versatile method that's been used across different cultures for thousands of years. If you've never woven before, that's a good place to start.
It's worth knowing who's leading the day. Pollard's own work has been in Expanded Textiles at Articulate Project Space and The Other Environmental Art Exhibition 2026 at Artbau Gallery in Brookvale, and she was a finalist in the Northern Beaches Environmental Art and Design Prize 2026 with The Living Circuit. This session is part of a series of random weave workshops she's running across New South Wales, so it's one of several stops on her current tour.
