A two-hour hands-on portrait photography workshop with Damien Frost and Edwina Richards, covering lighting techniques and studio portraiture.
Damien Frost and Edwina Richards are running a portrait photography workshop at Watt Space Gallery on Wednesday 30 September, starting at 5:30pm. It's a two-hour session, and they're providing the flash and equipment, so you don't need to bring your own gear to get stuck in.
Frost is an Australian-born, London-based photographer whose work centres on identity, transformation and the aesthetics of subculture, with a particular focus on the city's queer clubs and alternative nightlife. His original Night Flowers series was shot over a decade across London's late-night dancefloors, clubs, cabaret venues and streets, where costume, gesture and performance become instruments of self-definition; it was published by Merrell in 2016. For this Newcastle chapter, commissioned through a residency at Watt Space Gallery, he's produced a new body of work documenting the drag, club and cabaret communities of the city and the wider Hunter region, which joins the Night Flowers family for the first time.
He's joined by Edwina Richards, an award-winning commercial and art photographer specialising in collaborative portraiture and social documentary, who founded the WHIP Collective (Women from the Hunter In Photography) in 2020. The session itself is a hands-on demonstration of lighting techniques, drawing on their combined experience of studio and in-situ portraiture, and it's held in a pop-up studio set up inside the gallery.
