NT Live screening of John Millington Synge's play The Playboy of the Western World, captured live from the National Theatre, London.
NT Live: The Playboy of the Western World screens at the Civic Theatre - Playhouse on Wednesday 22 July. It's a National Theatre production from London, captured live on stage and beamed here to Newcastle, so you're seeing the full play as it was performed in the West End rather than a filmed adaptation.
The play is John Millington Synge's The Playboy of the Western World, a story of youth and self-discovery set in the west of Ireland. It's a classic of the Irish stage, and this particular staging brings in a cast you'll recognise from recent screen work: Nicola Coughlan, who's been everywhere since Bridgerton; Eanna Hardwicke, from The Sixth Commandment; and Siobhan McSweeney, known for Derry Girls. Having them all together on one stage is a good reason to catch it, even if you're not usually one for the theatre.
Because it's an NT Live screening, the whole thing is recorded live from the National Theatre in London and projected onto the screen at the Playhouse. You get the full performance, the atmosphere of the original audience, and the close-ups that a normal seat in the stalls would miss. It's a handy way to see a London production without having to fly over to see it in person.
