15th anniversary of the Newcastle Writers Festival, with author interviews, readings, panels and writing workshops across the civic precinct.
The Newcastle Writers Festival returns to the Newcastle Civic Precinct from 2 to 4 April 2027, marking its 15th anniversary. It's a three-day run across the city, and this year it's a bit of a milestone for the festival.
The whole thing is built around hearing the stories behind the books: how a writer found a subject, shaped a character, or made sense of an experience. That comes through interviews, panels, readings, and writing-focused events that bring authors and audiences into conversation. The programme usually ranges from those one-on-one interviews and readings to panels on place, identity, history, and contemporary life, with practical writing workshops running alongside. Several sessions are live-streamed, so you can follow along even if you can't make it in person.
It's not just about the big names, either. The festival supports regional writing through the Fresh Ink Emerging Writer Prize for writers in regional NSW, and Story Hunter, which trains local writers to lead creative-writing work with primary-school students. The organisers also acknowledge the land the festival is run on belongs to the Awabakal and Worimi peoples, the Traditional Custodians, to whom the festival pays respect, Elders past, present, and emerging.

Logistically, it's spread across the civic precinct: NUspace on the corner of Hunter and Auckland Streets, the Conservatorium of Music Concert Hall at the corner of Auckland and Laman Streets, and Newcastle City Hall at 290 King Street, with smaller events held at Watt Space Gallery and The Press Book House. MacLean's Booksellers has traditionally held sales and signings at the event, so it's a good spot to pick up a copy and get it signed. The full programme for this edition hasn't been confirmed yet, so keep an eye on the official site for the line-up as it comes together.
