The Newcastle Hunter Jazz Festival returns to Newcastle City Hall from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August, marking its 37th year on the calendar. It's a three-day stretch that brings together some of the Hunter's and Australia's finest musicians, and it's built a reputation that draws people from every state in the country and over from New Zealand.
The scale of it is what stands out: 55 hours of live jazz spread across four rooms and dance areas, all under one roof. With multiple bands playing throughout the weekend, you can move between stages and styles without leaving the building. The range covers almost every corner of the genre — Traditional Jazz, Mainstream and Swing, Contemporary, Blues, Jazz Orchestras, Gospel, Gypsy, Bebop, Smooth, Fusion and Big Band. Whether you're there for the dance floors or just to sit and listen, there's plenty to work your way through.
Murray Scoble, President of the Newcastle Jazz Club, notes that the festival has been running for 37 years and continues to collaborate with NIMA to involve and encourage younger musicians to perform. It's a regular annual fixture that turns the coastal city into a celebration of music, culture and community, pairing the performances with food and drink from local vendors.
