Weekly live jazz session in an intimate venue inspired by 1920s New York jazz clubs, presented by the Newcastle Improvised Music Association.
Live Jazz kicks off at The Underground on Tuesday 28 July, and it's not just a one-off. It's the start of a weekly series that runs every Tuesday night through to 22 December, with music starting at 8:00 pm. The nights are put on by the Newcastle Improvised Music Association (NIMA Inc) together with The Grand Hotel, and the bill is a rotating line-up of local house bands, so you'll get a different group on stage each week.
The Underground is tucked inside The Grand Hotel at 32 Church Street, and it's billed as the home of jazz in Newcastle. The room itself is an intimate listening environment, described as resembling a New York jazz club of the 1920s — the kind of space where you can actually hear the music without having to shout over it. If you're into that sort of thing, it's a good spot to settle in for the evening.
And there's more to it than just the Tuesday nights. Thursday nights are jazz jams, running from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm, which rounds out the weekly rotation. Between the two, there's plenty of jazz on the go throughout the week if you're looking for it.

As for the venue, The Grand Hotel has a bar and restaurant, it's family-friendly and non-smoking, and disabled access is available. So, if you're heading down, you can grab a drink or a meal before the music starts. The Tuesday series runs from 28 July to 22 December, with music starting at 8:00 pm.
