Live jazz performances presented by the Newcastle Improvised Music Association Inc at The Underground, in the basement of The Grand Hotel.
Live jazz returns to The Underground on Tuesday 22 September, the start of a run that keeps going every Tuesday night through to 22 December. The sessions are presented by the Newcastle Improvised Music Association Inc (NIMA Inc) together with the hotel, and they're held in the basement of The Grand Hotel at 32 Church Street, Newcastle.
The room is an intimate listening environment designed to resemble a New York jazz club of the 1920s, and the bookings draw musicians from near and far. It's a dedicated space for the music, so you can settle in and listen rather than chatting over it. If you're more of a player than a listener, Thursday nights are reserved for the jazz jams, when the floor opens up to whoever wants to sit in.
Because it's in the basement of The Grand Hotel, you've got the hotel's bar and restaurant right there, and the venue is family-friendly and non-smoking, so it works whether you're coming alone for the music or bringing the kids along. They also welcome people with access needs.
